Understanding Your Relationship with Your Energy.
In the journey of building a business or achieving any meaningful goal, one key factor underlies our success: our energy. But what does it mean to truly understand your energy?

I find that it is about recognizing what fuels you, what aligns with your strengths, and what gives you a sense of purpose. Your energy, when in alignment, is our most powerful tool.

Read that again: Your energy is our most powerful tool.
When misaligned, though, it can drain you (me too, here), leaving us unfulfilled and dreading even the smallest tasks. In my opinion, understanding your relationship with energy is not a wellness buzzword; it is an essential tool for sustaining motivation, building unbreakable resilience, and developing the clarity you need to reach your goals.
The first step is to learn to recognize the symptoms of

Your Energy Misalignment.

Start by considering your relationship with what you are doing right now. Right. Now. If you dread going to work, showing up at the gym, or even spending time on a project you once enjoyed, your energy is likely out of alignment. This feeling often shows up as procrastination, frustration, or a general sense of being “stuck.”

In these cases, it is helpful to step back and ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” Maybe the answer is simple: you are THE expert, you need the paycheck, or it is a stepping stone to where you are going. If that is where your answer ends, however, it is likely that there is a disconnect between what you are doing and why you are doing it.

So, okay, what do we do? It is one thing to understand the disconnect, it is another thing entirely to learn to find the balance between the present and your vision.

If your current job or role is not exactly what you would consider your “dream,” don’t worry – many of us have been there. I have been there. And I want to tell you, it is completely possible to find a balance between where you are now and where you want to be. While your current role may not fuel you the way you need, you can set boundaries to preserve your energy and get the work done that you need to do, while also focusing on what is essential for your next chapter. Establishing the right balance
for you allows you to grow within your current role while staying connected to your bigger goals, building momentum over time without burning out.

Part of the disconnect may be tied in with making yourself do things when you simply cannot do them. I will use myself as an example, it is highly unlikely you are going to find me doing my best development work if it is not early early (I’m talking 4 am) or unless I am pulling an all nighter (I still do when I get excited on a project). So let me ask – when do you work best?

Understanding your relationship with your energy deeply involves figuring out when you work best. Some people find their peak energy in the early morning, while others hit their stride in the evening. Start by taking note of your own patterns and THEN CHOOSE to work with them instead of against them. Align your most important tasks with your high-energy times, and use your low-energy periods for tasks that are less demanding. By respecting your natural rhythms, you maximize productivity and feel
more accomplished at the end of each day.

I find that identifying why you are doing what you are doing is the next step. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I here because it is comfortable, or does this role genuinely excite me?
  •  Do I wake up feeling motivated, or does the thought of the day ahead drain me?
  •  What would I be doing if I were not held back by fear or the need for financial
    stability?

There is no right or wrong answer. Your “why” might be linked to financial stability, expertise, or obligation. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this! But, if you find that your why does not connect to a sense of purpose or personal growth, this could explain why you feel drained.

Let’s talk about how to reconnect with your energy. Not in a hokey, feel goody way (although there is that), but in a way that gets you excited about the business you want to own and the life you want to lead. Think about these for me:

Identify what energizes you. Think back to moments when you felt completely in flow. What were you doing? Who were you with? Recognizing these moments helps you identify tasks and environments that fuel your energy and bring out your best self.

Reframe your mindset around what you are doing right now. If you are not able to change what you are doing right now, try reframing how you think about it. For instance, can you approach a task you dread as a chance to develop a new skill or build a valuable connection? Sometimes a small mindset shift can make a big difference in how we feel about our current responsibilities.

Create a vision of what is possible. Allow yourself to envision your ideal day or role without limitations. Write it down, visualize it, and think of small, realistic steps to move closer to it. This vision helps bridge the gap between your current role and your aspirations.

Align your daily actions with your vision. Small, consistent actions each day keep your energy in alignment with your goals. While not every task will be thrilling, connecting daily actions with your big-picture vision makes even routine tasks feel meaningful. Listen to your body and mind. Pay attention to how you feel in different settings and with different tasks. Are there people or environments that leave you feeling drained? Respect these signals. They are often guiding you toward choices that better align
with your true self.

Owning your energy is about recognizing misalignment and being willing to make adjustments. If you need your current job for financial reasons or as a stepping stone, balancing that with your vision for the future will help you thrive without feeling trapped. Understanding your energy gives you the insight to bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to go. And in doing so, you become your best self across all areas of life, professionally and personally.
